Exercising to Prevent Bone Loss

It’s long been noted that exercise helps slow the onset of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Working out seems to increase not only muscle mass, but bone density as well. This is especially true when performing weight-bearing exercise. Just how does exercise help prevent bone loss, and what type of fitness routines are most effective?
When muscles are exercised, the bones they are attached to must also help perform. They do this by increasing their resistance in order to handle the extra exertion. The end result is that they are also strengthened in the process. Some doctors also believe that exercise reduces the amount of calcium lost from bone stores, though exactly how this works is not known. Bone resistance is involved even more when weights are involved, which is why weight-bearing exercise is so effective in preventing osteoporosis.
